The College Coaches Camp 2008 hosted by Sacred Heart University was held at Baseball Heaven in Long Island, New York on August 12-13, 2008.
This camp is highly organized and utilizes four adjacent fields at Baseball Heaven which is a first rate baseball facility unlike anything that currently exists in the midwest. Wayne Mazzoni, the Pitching Coach at Sacred Heart University runs this camp in exceptional fashion. Top Schools include Bucknell, Connecticut, Cornell, Fairfield, Fordham, Penn, Rhode Island, Tufts, Vassar and Yale.
Three games are played per player on Day Two.
The list of colleges in attendance with coaches watching the players was impressive. The schools represented were Bucknell, Connecticut, Cornell, Fairfield, Farmingdale, Fordham, Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Southern Connecticut, Marist, Penn, Rhode Island, Swarthmore, Tufts, Vassar and Yale.
Coach Mazzoni provided outstanding content in non-traditional lecture format that was both practical and motivational to the primary pitchers on Day One. Using illustrative examples on a video screen he provided the pitchers with specific advice to help them develop a practice regimen that will add mph to their fastball, how to make their individual workouts more beneficial and specific workouts with a pitching purpose to improve muscle strenght and emphasize movement. He also provided a recruiting workshop presentation which giving players and parents pragmatic information and material about the recruiting process that is outstanding and is a must for all participants and parents.

Jason Ormond, Whitney Young Magnet High School in Chicago - Class of 2009 met Coach Mazzoni at the 2007 Stanford University ~ All Star Camp which he attended in June 2007. He found Coach Mazzoni's approach to pitching to be one that he could relate to and was helpful to him. The following year when he learned of the opportunity to attend the College Coaches Camp in August 2008 he was looking forward to improving his baseball skills and play in front of many college baseball coaches. Every time a player walks on to the field another opportunity to develop or improve skills is presented.

Jason Ormond stepping up to the plate College Baseball Coaches Camp 2008
On Day Two of the 2008 College Coaches Camp, three controlled games were played. Jason Ormond, Class of 2009 was a member of Team 4. The team was coached by both Sacred Heart University and Vassar College baseball coaches. To speed up play and to better evaluate both the hitter and the pitcher, the pitch count was advanced to begin at 1 ball and 1 strike. This is a typical Showcase venue format. Each pitcher faced 6 batters during an inning. Regardless of the number of outs recorded, six batters were at the plate for each and every inning. This showcase format puts both the hitter and pitcher in a more intense situation.
In Game 1, Jason Ormond played First Base and had two hits, both were solid singles. In his second plate appearance he reached on a single and then scored a run.
In Game 2, Jason Ormond was the starting pitcher for the visiting team. In his four innings pitched, 24 batters were faced; the game box score was 7 Hits and 4 Runs scored; 2 of the runs were earned and 2 of the runs were unearned and were scored off of errors. Two Double Plays were induced and Jason picked off a runner between 2nd and 3rd base. During his four innings pitched he struck out three and allowed three base on balls.
The First Inning opened with a 5-3 play for the 1st recorded out. The second batter at the plate reached base on balls; the catcher subsequently threw this runner out at third base. The third batter was a strikeout. In normal play this inning would be over with no damage, once again, however for this showcase, six batters appeared in every inning. The fourth batter reached first base on a single. A double then scored the first run of the game for the opposing team. The final play was a 3-1 for the out. First Inning Box Score; 2 hits, 1 K and 1-BB; one run scored. Score: Home Team - 1; Visiting Team - 0.
In the Second Inning the first batter reached on a single. The catcher threw the batter out on a steal attempt. The second batter reached on a Single. This batter was picked off by the pitcher between 2nd and 3rd base. The third batter reached on a base on balls. The 4th batter was a 3-Unassisted Out. The fifth batter hit into a Double Play which cleared the bases. The sixth and final batter for the inning was out on a fly out to center field. Second Inning Box Score; 2 Hits; 1 BB; 1 pick off by the pitcher and one double play. No runs scored. Game Score: Home Team - 1; Visiting Team -0.
The third inning opened with the batter getting a single. Then the next hitter reached on an E-4. The third batter loaded the bases on a base on balls. The fourth batter hit into a Double play with one run scored. The fifth batter was out at first and another run scored. The final batter in the frame was a strike out. Two runs scored on one hit. In the inning E-4; and Double Play, K and a BB. Game Score Home Team 3; Visiting Team - 0.
In the top of the fourth inning Jason Ormond reached on a Walk. His at bat continued under the Showcase format and the count was started over at 1 ball and 1 strike. He singled to left field and the runner ahead of him advanced to third. This runner scored. At the middle of the fourth inning the score was Home Team 3; Visiting Team -1.
At the bottom of the fourth inning, the first batter was out on a 4-3. The second batter reached on an E-5. The thrid batter was a strike out. The fourth batter reached on a Walk. The fifth batter hit a single. the sixth batter also hit a single which scored a run. Game score at the end of the fourth inning was Home team over the Visiting Team 4-1.
